Photobiomodulation is a non-invasive, painless technique for the treatment of dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction. The technology can also be used to treat styes, chalazions and blepharitis.
Photobiomodulation uses different wavelengths through a mask that is placed on the face. Red light stimulates the production of ATP (cellular energy) and the production of elastin and collagen, while blue light has a bactericidal effect.
The treatment can make recently formed styes and chalazions disappear. It also prevents the appearance of new styes or chalazions. It treats blepharitis and is particularly effective if preceded by a Zest® treatment. Heat liquefies the oil contained in the Meibomius glands. Manual expression of the glands follows exposure to red light.
