Dry eyes or watery eyes? If you are one of the 30% of the population who suffer from this condition, you know the pain and discomfort it causes. Many describe it as feeling like there is sand in their eyes or a strong urge to constantly blink.
Dry eye syndrome is rapidly becoming a widespread issue among adults, particularly due to the excessive use of screens.
Follow the journey of Camille, a client at Eye Am, who sought treatment to relieve her eye dryness caused by prolonged exposure to screens in her role as production manager at a marketing agency.
Find out what happens during a visit to our facility, what you can expect… and what makes our approach against dry eyes so unique!

Dry eye syndrome is not a trivial condition and, in the vast majority of cases, requires treatment in a clinic. Often overlooked by certain institutions, it goes unnoticed by most patients who come to us.
However, dry eyes are a serious problem that can worsen over time, leading to additional complications and making it more difficult to relieve and/or cure completely.
Patients who, through no fault of their own, have not been diagnosed with dry eyes and who, as a result, neglect their condition will see their glands atrophy until they disappear. It is at this point that the condition becomes permanent.
Fortunately, we have implemented an early detection program and are therefore tackling the problem at its source. Schedule an appointment for an eye dryness evaluation.
Thirty years ago, only 5% of the population suffered from dry eye syndrome. Today, it affects one in three people, and most people don’t even know they have it.
With a team of individuals each boasting over 30 years of experience in the field and driven by a desire to make a difference, Eye Am decided to innovate and launch Quebec’s only brand dedicated to dry eye syndrome.
Because, like you, we believe that eye health is of utmost importance, we offer our comprehensive dry eye treatment program throughout most of Quebec.

Consultation and pre-testing
You will meet with the optometrist’s assistant for a comprehensive assessment and a complete eye exam to determine your condition.
Using Lipiview or Lipiscan technology, he will be able to perform tests and image the Meibomian glands to check for obstruction and atrophy of some or all of them.
Consultation with the optometrist
Next, you will meet with the optometrist to confirm your diagnosis of dry eye. They will analyze the images of your eye taken beforehand to assess the quality and quantity of your tears, the integrity of your ocular surface, and the presence of inflammatory markers.
Your optometrist will be able to identify the cause of your dry eyes: a deficiency in aqueous tears, a deficiency in lipid tears, or both. They will then be able to offer you an appropriate treatment plan and comprehensive care to correct the problem in the short, medium, and long term.
Home and clinic treatment
Your first visit will conclude with a meeting with our dry eye clinic manager, who will provide you with more details about the solutions offered by your optometrist, the costs involved, and will schedule your next treatments according to the plan defined until your treatment review.
Your treatment assessment will enable your optometrist to monitor your condition and symptoms and adjust your treatment based on the results obtained.
Don’t let your symptoms worsen. Make an appointment for early screening with one of our professionals and discover the right solution for optimal eye comfort!
The assessment combines a questionnaire on symptoms and lifestyle habits, tear film measurement, tear colorimetry and high-resolution Meibomian gland imaging. This protocol pinpoints the exact cause of dryness, whether evaporative or aqueous deficient, as well as severity and aggravating factors like screen time, climate or medication.
This comprehensive assessment quickly guides patients toward the right treatment and avoids diagnostic errors. Patients leave with a clear roadmap to improve visual comfort and restore natural tear production.
Symptoms include burning, stinging or gritty sensations, redness, fluctuating vision, light sensitivity and difficulty wearing contact lenses or working long hours in front of a screen. Frequent blinking and a constant need to hydrate the eyes are also common signs of chronic dry eye.
At Eye Am, early identification of these symptoms allows for intervention before the condition causes repeated infections, chronic pain or altered corneal scarring. Early screening makes all the difference in preserving daily visual comfort.
Options range from artificial tears and specialized eye drops to technology-based procedures like IPL (intense pulsed light), LipiFlow, iLux, photobiomodulation and radiofrequency, which stimulate the Meibomian glands and reduce eyelid inflammation.
The approach is personalized based on the type and severity of dry eye, and also includes advice on eyelid hygiene, screen breaks and environmental humidification. Eye Am works with the leading medical optics equipment suppliers to guarantee the safety and effectiveness of each treatment, with close follow-up to adjust the protocol based on the patient’s progress.
Dry eye and rosacea are frequently associated: chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva and the skin around the eyes worsens dryness symptoms, causes persistent redness and disrupts lipid secretion in the tear film. Patients with ocular rosacea often experience more marked discomfort.
Eye Am systematically screens for rosacea during dry eye assessments and offers combined skin and eye treatments, promoting inflammation reduction and lasting relief for both skin and ocular comfort.
Prevention involves reducing exposure to dry or air-conditioned environments, managing screen time, applying warm compresses and regularly cleaning the eyelids. Increasing humidity in living spaces, taking frequent visual breaks and avoiding excessive forced-air heating also help protect the tear film.
At Eye Am, patients receive personalized recommendations to prevent dry eye progression before it affects visual health, especially for contact lens wearers and people exposed to urban pollution.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment targets the Meibomian glands and chronic eyelid inflammation to improve corneal hydration and eyelid comfort. This technology reduces redness, restores lacrimal lipid function and shows a high clinical efficacy rate within the first few sessions, especially for moderate to severe dry eye.
At Eye Am, a prior assessment confirms the indication for IPL treatment and checks for contraindications. Results are often visible within a few weeks, with a protocol adapted to each patient’s progress.
Artificial tears temporarily relieve symptoms by lubricating the ocular surface, but they generally do not treat the root cause, whether that’s Meibomian gland dysfunction, inflammation or an unfavorable environment. Optometrists recommend preservative-free drops tailored to each patient’s profile.
Eye Am combines artificial tears with underlying treatments like IPL, LipiFlow, radiofrequency or iLux to aim for lasting improvement and reduce dependence on daily drops. Regular clinical follow-up allows the root cause to be addressed in a preventive and corrective way.
Contact lens wearers, older adults, women going through menopause, heavy screen users and those with autoimmune or skin conditions (particularly rosacea and psoriasis) are most at risk of dry eye. Polluted, air-conditioned or heated environments also increase the risk of chronic dryness.
Eye Am encourages regular follow-up and protective visual routines for these at-risk groups, with proactive information on preventing symptoms and recognizing the first signs of ocular discomfort.
Duration varies based on the severity and type of dry eye. Acute cases often respond within a few weeks with basic hydration care, while chronic or mixed dryness requires combined protocols (IPL, LipiFlow, iLux, steroid eye drops) over several months with frequent check-ins.
Eye Am personalizes each therapeutic journey and adjusts the frequency of check-ups to ensure the treatment’s effectiveness and safety over time. Options include LipiFlow, iLux, photobiomodulation, radiofrequency and IPL, depending on the patient’s clinical profile.
Combining treatments is often the key to success for resistant or severe cases: artificial tears, eyelid hygiene, IPL, LipiFlow and lifestyle changes work together to restore tear film balance and reduce the chronic nature of the condition.
At Eye Am, each treatment plan is custom-designed to leverage the best medical and technological practices, with personalized follow-up and adjustments based on each patient’s response.
Evaporative dry eye, the most common form, is caused by Meibomian gland dysfunction that leads to too-rapid evaporation of the tear film. Aqueous deficient dry eye results from insufficient tear production by the lacrimal glands, often linked to autoimmune diseases or aging.
Eye Am precisely evaluates the type of dry eye through Meibomian gland imaging and specialized testing, allowing patients to be directed toward the most appropriate treatment: IPL and LipiFlow for the evaporative form, eye drops and supplements for the aqueous deficient form.
Extended screen use significantly reduces blinking frequency, which promotes tear film evaporation and the onset of digital dry eye symptoms. Office workers, students and video gamers are particularly affected by this form of dryness tied to digital habits.
Eye Am recommends the 20-20-20 rule (a 20-second break every 20 minutes looking at something 20 feet away), humidifying the work environment and a dry eye assessment to evaluate the impact of screen time on eye health.
