Intense pulsed light (IPL) is an ocular application derived from a procedure used in dermatology, primarily for the treatment of rosacea (couperose). Its use for dry eye dates back to 2009, when Dr. Rolando Toyos developed a specific protocol for this indication. IPL has several mechanisms of action, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, and helps eliminate the abnormal blood vessels found in ocular rosacea, which can cause dry eye.
The treatment reduces inflammation and redness and thins the oil in the Meibomian glands, thereby helping to relieve symptoms of dry eye. It also stimulates collagen production.
