DID YOU KNOW ?

DID YOU KNOW ?

Dry eye affects over 30% of the population. Symptoms include discomfort similar to the sensation of a foreign body in the eye, excessive tearing, eye fatigue, and even vision instability. It is becoming rapidly widespread, notably due to overexposure to screens which affects blinking quality and frequency.

How dry eye occurs ?

Dry eye is a condition caused by poor tear quality or reduced tear volume. Blinking is responsible for the production of oil by the meibomian glands located in the eyelids. The oil layer acts as a barrier between the air and the water in our tears to prevent evaporation between blinks.

When the blinking is insufficient, the oil thickens in the glands until it causes obstruction. When the blockage becomes complete, the glands atrophy due to lack of use.

The onset of symptoms can be prevented by regular assessment and treatment, if necessary, of the meibomian glands to drain them and reduce the risk of atrophy.

Several clinical treatments are now available to reduce or prevent meibomian dysfunction as well as other conditions affecting the eyelids, such as blepharitis, ocular rosacea, styes, and chalazia.
