IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technology is an ocular application of a dermatological procedure used mainly for the treatment of rosacea. Its use in dry eye treatment dates back to 2009 when Dr. Rolando Toyos developed a specific IPL protocol for this indication. Different mechanisms of action of IPL include anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects as well as the removal of abnormal blood vessels found in ocular rosacea which can cause dry eyes.
The treatment reduces inflammation and redness, and liquefies the oil inside the meibomian glands, providing relief from dry eye symptoms. It also stimulates collagen production.
I suffer from rosacea and have signs and symptoms of eyelid or eye inflammation.
